About the role
We have an opportunity for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person from the community to join our team in Hobart.
This is an identified position. TALS considers being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as a genuine occupational requirement. We adopt the Commonwealth definition of Aboriginality.
(1) Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
(2) Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
(3) Be accepted as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which you live.
The Tasmanian Aboriginal Service (TALS) specialises in providing advice and support in the areas of criminal, civil and family law to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons living in Tasmania and does so in a culturally appropriate and supportive way. We also contribute to policy and law reform.

About the role
The Aboriginal Liaison Officer Team Leader supports the Community Engagement Manager in leading a team of state-wide Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALO) and assists in the delivery of their daily tasks and escalated matters.
The Team Leader will play a critical role in linking TALS and the Aboriginal communities in Tasmania. Working closely with Lawyers, they ensure clients can access the service and support they need as they navigate various legal and social challenges.
About you
You are connected to community and have a strong understanding of the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture and have the ability to build effective and respectful relationships with members across communities and supporting organisations.
Hold relevant qualifications such as social work, youth justice or counselling and/or demonstrated experience in case management, supporting vulnerable people.
Have skills and experience leading and/or mentoring a team or individuals in a relevant setting.
You understanding of the social and legal issues faced by Aboriginal communities, coupled with an ability to source and navigate solutions to assist in addressing those issues.
Are able to develop rapport and trust with clients and stakeholder.
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, can manage your time, work with computer programs and can navigate reports and systems.
You show initiative, resourcefulness, and personal/professional resilience and reliability.

Requirements
The successful candidate will need to undergo a National Police Check and a Working with Vulnerable Persons registration.
Travel may occur across Tasmania.
