Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission.

Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the 'Courts Group'.

Funds in Court

Funds in Court (FIC) supports the Senior Master, who holds funds, investments, and assets, principally for people with a disability. In 2024–2025, FIC managed funds and assets valued at $2.42 billion on behalf of 7,170 clients. FIC is dedicated to ensuring the safe and effective investment of clients' funds at low cost, and to using funds in a manner that responds to clients' diverse needs and aspirations.  FIC is a self-funded, not-for-profit division of the Court that also manages funds paid into Court pending the outcome of a proceeding, as dispute monies and security for costs, and pursuant to the Trustee Act 1958 (Vic).

About the role

Funds in Court are seeking a Senior Legal Specialist to join our Legal Services team in a newly created role. Working closely with the Legal Services Manager, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, timely legal advice to the Senior Master and Judicial Registrar. You will also support the supervision, development, and mentoring of a team of approximately 18 staff, contributing to a collaborative and high-performing environment.

The Legal Services team works closely with Client Services to provide safe, responsive, and client-focused outcomes. The role offers exposure to a diverse range of legal matters, including property, domestic building law, deceased estates, consumer law, infringements, legal capacity, guardianship and administration, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, criminal law, and family law.

Key accountabilities include:

• Supporting the leadership and operational oversight of the Legal Services function, including contributing to workforce capability, service delivery outcomes and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Providing supervision, technical leadership and guidance to Senior Legal Officers and the broader team, ensuring consistent delivery of high-quality, risk-based legal advice and supporting capability development.
• Providing authoritative, high-level legal advice on complex matters relating to legal capacity, Funds in Court (FIC) administration, and associated legal risks, including liaison with medical experts.
• Providing expert advice to the Senior Master and senior stakeholders, including judicial officers and external parties, on matters affecting the administration, investment and management of Funds in Court.
• Leading governance and compliance oversight of Legal Services' operations, including monitoring adherence to legislative requirements, overseeing complaints management, and ensuring robust, risk-informed processes across Legal Services.
• Overseeing the provision of advice on contracts, leases and agreements to which the Senior Master is a party in relation to property purchased from funds in Court.

About you

• Admission as an Australian Lawyer, holding a current practising certificate with the Supreme Court of Victoria.
• Demonstrated high-level legal expertise, with the ability to provide authoritative advice on complex legal matters.
